Concord Woman Dies Of Stab Wounds, Husband Charged: Report

CONCORD, NH — A woman hospitalized Sunday after being stabbed and beaten at a Concord Heights apartment complex has died. Nathalia Da Paixao, a mother, wife and resident of the Edgewood Heights development on the Branch Turnpike, was 35. The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office announced that her husband, Emerson Jaques Figueiredo, 42, was arrested and charged with two alternative counts of second-degree murder.

The counts included "one for knowingly causing the death of Ms. Da Paixao by stabbing her, and the other for recklessly causing the death of Ms. Da Paixao, under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life, by stabbing her," said Kate Spiner, the AG's director of communications.

Police and firefighters were dispatched to the complex just before noon Sunday for a report of a man holding a woman to the ground near the compound's tennis courts, smashing her head. As first responders arrived, they found the woman unconscious and covered in blood from multiple stab wounds. A man — who was also covered in blood — was detained at the scene while the woman was transported to the hospital where she later died.

Police spoke to numerous tenants and condo owners about the case and also searched the couple's apartment for evidence.

Figueiredo was expected to be arraigned in Merrimack County Superior Court Monday. His booking photo was not available at post time.

Da Paixao was the third murder victim in the capital city in nine days. Marshall John Villeneuve, 64, was murdered in his apartment on Pittman Street on Friday. Lila Darjee, 47, was murdered by her husband in an apparent murder-suicide incident in the Concord Gardens Apartment Complex last Friday.
