Fire Investigators: Do You Know Who Set Recent Brushfires?

Concord Fire Marshal: Some of the blazes in West Concord, Penacook, and Hopkinton "were intentionally set."

Fire and police investigators are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or persons who may be responsible for setting a number of wildfires in the capital region during the last three weeks, according to an alert from Concord Fire Marshal Sean Brown.

Brushfires have struck West Concord at the quarries and Marjory Swope Park, the Mastyard State Forest in Hopkinton, and behind the former Rivco property in Penacook between April 25, and May 8, 2015.

“All of the fires appear to have been caused by human activity,” Brown said in a statement. “There is reason to believe that some of the fires were intentionally set.”

Brown added that “a series of fires” have occurred in the Mastyard State Forest, which led investigators to believe they might all be connected. The Hopkinton Police and Fire departments, as well as the New Hampshire Division of Forest & Lands, are investigating those fires.

“We are asking anybody that may have information about the cause of the fires to contact the Concord Fire Department or Concord Police Department,” Brown said. “We also want to remind the public to exercise extreme caution with open flame and cigarettes while engaging in outdoor recreation.”
