Kittery Man Accused Of Wrong-Way Drunken Driving: New Hampshire State Police Roundup

CONCORD, NH — A man from Maine was accused of wrong-way drunken driving on Interstate 95 on Friday morning, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Just before 11:15 a.m., state police dispatch began receiving reports about a driver driving erratically south in the northbound lane near the Hampton toll plaza. After passing the tolls, the driver crossed over the center median and began driving north in the southbound lane, Michal Sventek, a public information officer for state police, said.

“Troopers responded to the scene and utilized several tactics to stop the vehicle, identified as a 2019 Jeep Cherokee, including tire deflation devices and cruiser positioning,” he said. The driver of the Jeep avoided them and kept going at a reduced speed, against traffic, in the highspeed breakdown lane.”

Later, other troopers attempted to stop the driver, later identified as Robert Cresta, 70, of Kittery, ME, while stopping opposite traffic, but that failed, too. A trooper then decided to use their cruiser to stop the Jeep.

“The Jeep then came to a full stop,” Sventek said, “but not before swerving and causing a minor slow-speed collision with two otherwise uninvolved vehicles.”

Cresta was arrested on reckless conduct and possession of a controlled drug charges, both felonies, as well as aggravated driving while intoxicated. He was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital “for precautionary treatment,” Sventek said, and released on bail later. Cresta is due in Portsmouth District Court on April 9.

The state police were assisted on the scene by the Greenland Fire Department and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. While impairment appears to be a factor in this crash, all aspects remain under investigation. Anyone who witnessed this event is asked to contact Sergeant Greg Dube at greg.c.dube@dos.nh.gov, or the State Police dispatch at 603-223-4381.

“Drago was uninjured and remained on scene to cooperate with the investigation,” Sventek said.
