Plus: Driver dies during dump truck crash on a turnpike and blotters from around the Granite State.
CONCORD, NH — The luck of the Irish was not with dozens of people in New Hampshire who were arrested after New Hampshire State Police spent St. Patrick’s Day weekend performing “a high-visibility enforcement initiative” across the state.
Troopers stopped 1,785 vehicles between early Friday morning and 2 a.m. Tuesday. According to Tyler Dumont, a public information officer for state police, the stops resulted in 647 summonses, 1,384 warnings, and 60 arrests. An additional 30 patrols supplemented the efforts, he said. Those extra patrols were “specifically focused on finding impaired and speeding drivers,” Dumont said.
Of the 60 arrests, 32 were traffic-related offenses, 20 were driving while intoxicated, and 28 were warrants, drug offenses, or other criminal charges. Dumont said there were also 49 crashes — 37 without injuries, five with minor injuries, and seven hit-and-runs. There were no fatal crashes.

“We remind every driver that the vast majority of adverse events on our highways are the result of behavioral choices,” New Hampshire State Police Major Brendan Davey said. “Safer choices bring better outcomes. We ask everyone to slow down, put their phones down, buckle up and never drink and drive. Troopers will always work to keep our roadways safe. Please partner with us to do the same.”

Driver Dies During Crash With Dump Truck
A cellphone accident detention notification led state police to a fatal crash on the Spaulding Turnpike on March 13.
Around 8 a.m., troopers were sent to the area just north of Exit 8 West in Dover for a crash. Callers dialing in to 911 also reported a crash between an SUV and a dump truck.
Due to the severity of the crash, Michael Sventek, a public information officer for state police said, the collision analysis and reconstruction unit, as well as the unmanned aerial systems unit, were requested to assist with the investigation.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2024 Western Star dump truck, driven by a man in his mid-50s from Pittsfield, was stopped in the right lane due to highway traffic and congestion. James L. Stammers, 39, of Lynn, Massachusetts, was driving a 2016 Lincoln Navigator when he rear-ended the dump truck.
“Stammers died from his injuries on the scene,” Sventek said. “(The dump truck driver) was not hurt. There were no passengers in either of the vehicles.”
Dover police, Dover fire and rescue teams, the officer of the chief medical examiner, and NH DOT.
All aspects of the crash remain under investigation. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation was asked to contact Trooper Alison Baumbach at alison.j.baumbach@dos.nh.gov.
