'Suspicious' Van at School Bus Stop Was Actually a Dad Looking for His Child's Bus Stop, Police Say

The driver of a white van who stopped to talk to kids at a school bus stop in East Brunswick Tuesday is no longer considered suspicious.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The driver of a white van who stopped to talk to kids at a school bus stop in East Brunswick Tuesday was actually just a parent new to the area, looking for his child's correct bus stop, East Brunswick police said.

However, a second incident of a white van stopping to talk to schoolchildren Wednesday remains suspicious and under investigation.

On Wednesday night, East Brunswick police said they had received two calls from the community that a suspicious white van was stopping at school bus stops in town and that its driver was trying to talk to kids or offer them a ride home. The two incidents were reported at Dunhams Corner Road and Valley Forge Drive and another in the section of town known as "Presidents' Streets" off Old Stage Road.

But now police say there was no attempted luring in the area of Dunhams Corner Road and Valley Forge Drive. A 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, a child said the driver of a white van slowed down and asked the kids waiting for the bus, "What school do you go to?"

He was described as an Asian man, approximately 30 years old, with black hair and black stubble facial hair.

A child told his parents, who called the police. East Brunswick police located that man, and found out he is actually a local resident new to the area who was looking for his child’s new bus stop. The man fully cooperated with police and this incident is no longer considered suspicious, said Lt. Sean Goggins.

However, that incident is unrelated to the incident on Presidents' Streets off Old Stage Road. In that case, the driver of a white van offered a child a ride home at 3:15 Wednesday. It is actively being investigated by the East Brunswick police department’s detective bureau.
