A quick look at just some of what's going on in Fort Lee this Columbus Day week
Monday is Columbus Day, a federal holiday—meaning no school, among other things, and hopefully, a day off from work; but once we get to Tuesday, Fort Lee’s in for a pretty busy week.
Below is a quick look at five things you should know about this week and/or might not want to miss:

The board will listen to the public for one hour—from 6 to 7 p.m.—and then go into private session. Members of the public will be limited to three minutes each, and the meeting will be capped at one hour. This will be strictly enforced, according to school officials.
The board will not return after their private session.
Number two (Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. – )
After the BOE special meeting, residents can head right over to Lewis F. Cole Middle School, where the Fort Lee Homeowners Association is hosting a "candidates night"—a debate among candidates running for local office, including Fort Lee Mayor and two seats on the Borough Council.
The event starts at 7:30 p.m.
Number three (Tuesday, 8 p.m. – )
Guest speaker/reader at museum
Also on Tuesday evening, Emmy Award-winning writer Alan Brennert will give a reading from his new and not-yet-published novel about Palisades Amusement Park, Palisades Park, at the Fort Lee Museum at 8 p.m. Seating is limited, and entry is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Fort Lee Historical Society exhibit at the museum, “Palisades Amusement Park: Our Last Summer in the Sun,” runs through January 29, 2012
Number four (Thursday, 8 p.m. – Borough Hall)
The Fort Lee Mayor and Council regular meeting for the month is Thursday at 8 p.m. in Borough Hall’s council chambers. The agenda for the meeting will be available on the borough’s website as the meeting day gets closer, and you can always pick up a hard copy at Borough Hall starting mid-afternoon Wednesday.
Number five: (Saturday, 9 a.m. – )
And on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Fort Lee Health Department is sponsoring its 17th annual health fair at the Fort Lee Community Center.
This year’s health fair will include the following, according to the health department:
- Flu vaccine and pneumoccoccal vaccine “with no out of pocket expense” for people 65 and older and who have Medicare Part B
- $10 flu vaccinations and $15 fee pneumoccoccal vaccinations for all others
- Comprehensive blood test for seniors and veterans for a $10 fee. All others will be charged $30 for the blood test, according to the Health Department.
Pre-registration is required, and must be done in person at the health department for flu and pneumonia vaccines and blood work. The health department is located at 309 Main Street behind Borough Hall. Their hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays.
Additional screenings offered at this year’s health fair include blood pressure, body fat analysis, chiropractic, eye screenings, oral cancer and podiatry, according to the health department.
