Number Of GWB Suicides This Year At 9: Police
Police were looking for the 9th victim Monday.
FORT LEE, NJ — Nine people have committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge so far this year, police confirmed Monday.
Police were searching the Hudson River for the ninth victim Monday after he stopped an SUV he was driving on the bridge, went to the walkway and jumped, authorities said. Police described the man as being in his 30s.
Five of the nine confirmed deaths have occurred within the last month, said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police Department.

A New Jersey teenager jumped from the bridge July 24. A young Brooklyn woman jumped two days later. A man jumped on July 27 and another man jumped Aug. 7, Pentangelo confirmed.
There were 16 confirmed suicides in 2013 and 18 in both 2014 and 2015, up from a recent low of 12 in 2013, Pentangelo said.
