2 Men Charged With Murder In Somerset County Shooting

The fatal shooting occurred on March 1 which took the life of Steve Camino, 26, of Grove Street, North Plainfield.

NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — Two men were arrested for murder in connection to the March 1 fatal shooting and death of Steve Camino, 26, of Grove Street, North Plainfield.

Kenneth Hill, 21, of South Avenue, Plainfield and Daniel Carrera Cardona, 22, of Princeton Road, Piscataway were both charged and arrested, Acting Somerset County Prosecutor Thomas Chirichella, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor, and North Plainfield Chief of Police William G. Parenti announced.

On March 1, at around 9:36 p.m., North Plainfield Police went to the area of Grove Street and Prospect Place following a 911 call reporting shots fired, said Chirichella. Read More: Homicide, Shooting Raise Questions In Somerset County

Officers found a man who had been shot on Grove Street and immediately began life-saving measures and requested emergency medical personnel to come.

The man, identified as Camino was taken to an area trauma center where he was pronounced dead, said Chirichella.

A post-mortem examination was performed by the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, which found Camino’s death to be a homicide.

Following an investigation by detectives from the North Plainfield Police Department along with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Crime Scene Investigations Unit, the arrests were made.

Authorities are still investigating a motive.

On March 21, detectives from the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit along with members of the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Task Force -Newark Division, Somerset County Prosecutor's Office, and North Plainfield Police Department arrested Hill at a home in Plainfield.

Hill was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. Hill was taken to the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing in this matter.

On that same day, Daniel Carrera Cardona was also arrested without incident and charged with first-degree murder and first-degree conspiracy to commit murder. Carrera Cardona was also taken to the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing in this matter.
