What's Up With Hoboken Carjackings? Chief Responds; You Can Ask At Next Safety Forum
Hoboken's police chief called the recent carjackings an 'uptick.' Ask about that or other safety issues at the next Hoboken CAPS forum.
HOBOKEN, NJ — Got questions about public safety in Hoboken, or want to hear what's new?
The city's next CAPS (Community And Public Safety) Forum has been planned for Tuesday, Feb. 20, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Willie McBride's, 616 Grand St.
Among the recent crimes in the news, a carjacking attempt was reported last Thursday night on the 1000 block of Garden Street.

It was the third carjacking or carjacking attempt so far in 2024, so Patch reached out to the police for comment.
"The Hoboken Police Department is always concerned when criminal incidents occur in the city," said Chief Steven Aguiar. "I have full faith and confidence in our department to maintain the upmost safety for our residents and visitors. I do not have the specific data regarding carjackings throughout the state, but I do see several carjackings occurring on a regular basis when reported through the NJSP [New Jersey State Police]."

He added, "As for here in Hoboken, we have noticed an uptick when compared to this time last year, but I would not label it as incidents on the rise."

More On The Forum
The forum is part of a regular series, not in response to any incident. Residents will hear from representatives of the Hoboken Police Department, Hoboken Fire Department, Hoboken Office of Emergency Management, and the Hoboken EMS and Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
A question-and-answer session will be held, during which residents can ask about public safety related topics important to them.
