The Bayonne OEM later issued an update:
"As the news reports come in tonight of the serious flooding that occurred all around North Jersey today, there is plenty of evidence showing the dangers of driving into flooded areas. Scores of people were rescued all around Hudson and Bergen Counties as motorists dared to drive into flooded streets. BFD Chief Weaver reports that nearly a dozen people were rescued from their cars by firefighters in Bayonne earlier today. BFD responded to dozens of calls in a few hours, as our city was inundated with extensive rainfall in a short amount of time. Due to the amount of flooding that occurred in various parts of town, along with flooding reports from neighboring cities, OEM advised residents to stay off the roads today. Movement throughout the entire region was next to impossible. Forecasters are calling for more rain tonight and tomorrow, along with the possibility of severe weather, so we want to remind everyone to NEVER DRIVE INTO FLOODED AREAS.... TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN! If you see barricades or cones, do NOT drive around them, as they are placed for your safety."
“Bayonne is a mess,” one internet commenter wrote.
Several photos and videos of local flooding in the city were posted online, including the below video from NJ.com, which showed torrential downpours that left many of Bayonne's streets waterlogged.
