One NJ Town Ranks 5th For Best Sandwiches In U.S.; 3 Local Delis Cited

Where are the best sandwiches in New Jersey? Jersey City and 1 other NJ town wound up on a national list in time for National Sandwich Day.

The bread. The meat. The "mutz". Whether it's a hoagie, sub, Taylor ham and egg, pork roll, or Sloppy Joe, New Jersey towns are able to feed the sandwich lover. Two have made the top 50 in the country.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — As residents of Jersey City, Newark, and other New Jersey foodie towns know, Garden State residents love their sandwiches — whether they call them subs or hoagies, or Taylor ham and egg, pork roll and egg, and Sloppy Joes.

And the state is rife with delis and diners to serve up the best of the best.

Now Apartmentguide.com has confirmed what we all have been drooling over — delis in New Jersey have some of the best sandwiches in the country.

And what's on top, ahead of even New York City and Miami? Jersey City!

New Jersey's second largest city in the state came in at number 5, behind San Francisco, Miami, Pensacola, and (what?) Wilmington, Delaware.

"Call it pork roll (like they do in South Jersey) or Taylor ham (as they do up here), it doesn't matter when it comes to the taste of the Garden State's favorite meat product," said the publication. "That's just the tip of the deli meat scene here in Jersey City. You better bring the goods if you're going to sit right across the river from sub haven New York City."

They note that Jersey City has 243 delis, "the second-most per square mile anywhere in the nation." There are 16 per square mile (see list below).

They cite three local and family-run favorites: Andrea Salumeria, Second Street Bakery, and
Salumeria Ercolano.

This ranking won't be a surprise to anyone who's walked through Jersey City's neighborhoods or tried its expanding restaurant scene. In fact, this year, the city was also nationally ranked as an up-and-coming foodie town on a list by Food & Wine.

No other New Jersey towns made the top 10, but one other city made the top 50: Newark came in at number 40.

And Elizabeth and Clifton both placed in the top 100: Elizabeth at 66 and Clifton at 75.

Here are the top 10 cities, with delis per square mile:

  1. San Francisco, 20
  2. Sarasota, Fla., 9
  3. Wilmington, DE, 12
  4. Miami, 16
