WWII-Era Weapon Removed From College Student Housing In Hoboken: Update

A bomb squad helped remove a WWII-era ordnance from college housing in Hoboken on Thursday, officials said.

HOBOKEN, NJ — A piece of World War II-era weaponry was discovered in Stevens Institute of Technology student housing on Thursday and removed by a bomb squad, said officials and a college spokesperson.

A Hoboken police spokesperson confirmed for Patch on Friday that the item was discovered as part of a routine Fire Department inspection and was not related to an alleged firebombing plot uncovered in Hoboken the same day.

A joint statement from Hoboken's police and fire departments, along with the Stevens Institute of Technology, said Thursday that during a "routine inspection" on the 500 block of Hudson Street, a Stevens-affiliated property, "inspectors with the Hoboken Fire Department identified a World War II–era ordnance."

"The Hoboken Police Department, Hoboken Fire Department, and Stevens Institute of Technology coordinated, as the Jersey City Bomb Squad conducted a standard safety evaluation and ultimately removed the ordnance," the statement said.

She declined to answer questions about what kind of ordnance it was, or where the resident had obtained it.
