Drunken Man Entered Wrong Apartment, Resisted Arrest, Cops Say

A drunken Sparta man entered the wrong apartment early Monday morning and then tried to flee from officers, police said.

Jonathan R. Barkorn, 29, was charged with unlawful entry of a dwelling, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

According to a police department statement, officers responded to a report of an intruder inside a Main Street apartment at about 3:30 a.m. Monday. Police found a "highly intoxicated" Barkorn outside the residence, the report said.


The resident told officers he was surprised when Barkhorn entered his apartment through an unlocked front door and went into the kitchen, according to the report. Barkhorn explained to the resident that he entered by mistake, thinking it was his own apartment, according to the report.

Police said Barkhorn lives in an apartment approximately 2 miles away from the Main Street unit. 

When officers attempted to question Barkhorn, he attempted to run away and made it out of the building and across the parking lot before being tackled by an officer, according to the report.

The report said Barkhorn violently resisted and had to be brought under control physically and handcuffed. In the melee, Barkhorn sustained several abrasions and a split lip, the report said.

Police said he was transported to the Newton Medical Center where he was treated. He remained there for seven hours to allow his blood-alcohol level to fall to a safe level, according to the report.

Barkhorn also must face a $3,000 Summit City bench warrant for failing to appear in court to answer to a drug charge, the report said.

Summit Police remanded Barkhorn to the Union County Jail.
