Jefferson Twp Police Share School Safety Measures

In wake of Wednesday's school shooting in Florida, Jefferson Police share steps they've undertaken to keep children safe.

JEFFERSON, NJ — Following Wednesday's deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Jefferson Township Police are sharing the steps they've undergone to help keep schools safe.

"We have daily safety checks at all schools, monthly and random student and faculty drills, risk assessments, and constant contact with school administration and officials. We continually monitor and investigate all matters which could pose a threat to our community," police said.

Anyone who sees security issues should contact the principal or the school resource officers, Det. Kratzel or SRO Fabian. Residents who see something suspicious should contact the Jefferson Township Police Department (973) 697-1300 or email tips@jeffersonpolice.com.

Seventeen people were killed and numerous others were injured when a former student opened fire at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Wednesday. The alleged shooter, Nikolas Cruz, 19, was taken into custody shortly after the killing spree began just before the end of the school day.

Other New Jersey police departments have issued responses to the shooting. East Hanover and Howell both announced they will be ramping up police presence at schools as a precautionary measure.
