JERSEY CITY, NJ — Thanks to below-freezing temperatures and a January storm that dumped at least 11 inches of snow on Hudson County, Jersey City is still battling icy hills of snow. Besides undertaking their own snow removal efforts, the city has been hitting property owners with fines, a city spokesperson said.

Since the Jan. 25 storm, the city has issued more than 400 summonses to businesses and residents for snow violations such as not shoveling sidewalks, confirmed city spokesperson Nathaniel Styer.

Jersey City requires business owners to remove snow from sidewalks surrounding their properties within four hours of a snowstorm, and they may not push or plow the snow into the street. Homeowners have eight hours to remove the snow.

If the snow falls overnight, both homeowners and business owners must remove the snow eight hours after sunrise, the regulations say.

Fines start at $100, the city said.

As of Thursday, at least 430 tickets had been issued, Styer said. The most tickets were issued within a few days of the storm, he said.

He said that officials confirmed a snowfall of at least 9 inches during the January storm, but neighboring Hoboken said at least 11 inches had fallen.
