Garfield Police Pull Man From Burning SUV

2 police officers pulled an unconscious 61-year-old man out from the vehicle.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ —Two Garfield police officers pulled an unconscious man out of a burning SUV early Tuesday morning.

Police received a call just before 2 a.m. about a vehicle fire near MacArthur Avenue and Arnot Street, said Capt. Darren Sucorowski.

Officers Daniel Taylor and Marvin Monroig saw a 2000 Ford Explorer that was on fire. The vehicle crashed into the back of a parked vehicle, Sucorowski said.

The 61-year-old driver was unconscious behind the steering wheel. The officers broke the Explorer's windows, forced the door open, and dragged the man out of the vehicle, the captain said.

The Garfield Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. The driver was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for evaluation, Sucorowski said.

The driver struck 12 parked vehicles on MacArthur Avenue, a one-way street, before crashing and catching on fire, a preliminary investigation revealed.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing, the captain said.
