MARLBORO, NJ – The annual fanfare surrounding Marlboro Day came to a standstill after Mayor Jon Hornik announced the cancellation of the celebrated event earlier this month. This year’s Marlboro Day serves as the latest major event cancellation due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“Every year, we look forward to connecting with our friends and neighbors at our annual Marlboro Day event,” the mayor wrote in an email on Sept. 1. “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of this year’s event”.

The yearly fall festival, an end of summer tradition with food, family activities and local vendors, was slated to occur on Sept. 13.

But while the highly-anticipated family fair is postponed until 2021, the township will be offering a slew of other festivities in the coming months.

“Marlboro Recreation remains committed to their role in keeping our community connected, active, and engaged and are pleased to announce the following fall programming,” Hornik wrote.

The township will be hosting a twice-monthly Fall Movie Series through October, with all movies starting at 7 p.m. Seating will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event will be socially distanced and masks required when not seated, bring blankets, chairs and movie snacks. Please no dogs, alcohol or smoking. Free. No registration needed.

The movie lineup is as follows:

Friday Sept. 25: Monsters, Inc.
Friday Oct. 16: Hocus Pocus
Friday Oct. 30: Poltergeist

Marlboro will also be hosting a painted rocks scavenger hunt from Sept. 14 though Sept. 21. Registration on Community Pass is required.

Residents who wish to participate can find a rock and color, paint and decorate it with positive messages or pictures, then drop off the finished product at the Recreation Center. The Recreation Department will display them outside the Recreation Center and at Township parks. Participants will hunt along and discover the rocks displayed as they explore the township’s main and pocket parks.

Between September and November, a slew of additional adult, senior and youth programs will be offered through the township. Residents will be notified of upcoming event information, including Halloween events, on the Marlboro Township website.
