16 Jersey Shore Beaches Had Too Much Bacteria This Week

State environmental officials said New Jersey had 16 beaches with too much bacteria this week.

State environmental officials said New Jersey had 16 beaches with too much bacteria this week. At least one remained closed on Wednesday, and two others were under a "water quality advisory."

The Department of Environmental Protection administers the New Jersey Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program, and reported beach advisories and beach closings and other events. On Wednesday, the following beaches were under a water quality advisory:

  • Brick Township Windward Beach
  • Ocean Toms River Township Shelter Cove

  • Highlands Borough Highlands Rec Center

The following beaches, according to northjersey.com, were were under bacteria advisories Tuesday after testing on Monday found unsafe conditions (each beach includes the colony forming units; 104 is considered safe):

  • Avon, Sylvania Avenue, 110
  • Bradley Beach, Ocean Park Avenue, 170
  • Brick, Windward Beach, 510

  • Highlands, Miller Beach, 110
  • Long Branch, Atlantic Avenue, 340
  • Long Branch, North Bath Avenue, 130
  • Ocean Grove, Spray Avenue, 130
  • Spring Lake, Washington Avenue, 160
  • Spring Lake, Essex Avenue, 160
  • Sea Girt, Beacon Boulevard, 110
  • Toms River, Shelter Cove, 110
