Painter Inspired By Sandy Hook Beaches And Dunes; Exhibit Opens June 3

A painter describes Sandy Hook as a magical place surrounded by sunlight and water, with light and dark. See his work inspired by the Hook:

HIGHLANDS, NJ — There is a new art exhibit opening this weekend at Sandy Hook - Gateway National Park:

"By the Sea," an exhibit of paintings by Gregory Lewis, will open on Saturday, June 3. The exhibit opening and reception will be from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Fort Hancock Post Museum (Building 28) at Sandy Hook. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Inspired by the magical light reflected from the ocean, painter Gregory Lewis finds Sandy Hook a special place a place surrounded by water.

"It's as if I’m sitting on a small island," said Lewis of Sandy Hook. "As I paint in this special light, it transports me to a better place.”

The common thread in many of his pieces is a commanding fascination with natural sunlight.

“My fascination with light and shadow started with the discovery and respect of two great artists, Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer," he said.

The art exhibit will be on display through Labor Day. The Post Museum is open on weekends from 1 pm to 5 pm. There is no fee to visit the Fort Hancock area of Sandy Hook.
