1. Brookdale Community College will layoff staff amid rising costs (njtoday.com) — Brookdale Community College in Middletown is preparing staff layoffs as soaring health benefit and utility costs collide with enrollment that's still below pre-pandemic levels. Leaders say they're restructuring to protect academics and student services without steep tuition hikes, while regional centers in Wall and Freehold will remain open and the college looks to expand programs for adult and career-focused learners.
   

2. Middletown Conservation Commission May Skip September (upriseri.com) — Middletown's Conservation Commission expects to cancel its September meeting because expiring terms and a possible change to liaison voting could leave it without a quorum. Chair Melissa Welch says she'll aim to reconvene October 28 and urges residents to bring project concerns directly to the Planning Board in the meantime, stressing the commission's advisory role on issues like stormwater and development.
   

3. 2026 Shore Conference Boys Soccer Preview: Class A Central (shoresportsinsider.com) — Middletown South's boys soccer program gets a nod here for last season's Shore Conference Tournament and Central Jersey Group III titles, even though it has moved from Class A Central to A North. The preview mainly spotlights new Class A Central favorites like Manasquan, Freehold Township, Ocean, Shore, Long Branch, Rumson-Fair Haven and Ranney, outlining key returning players and how the division stacks up for 2026.
   

4. Cape May becomes third N.J. county to demand Sanctuary Statehood repeal - (savejersey.com) — Middletown Township is cited alongside Toms River and Monmouth County as part of a growing bloc of local governments opposing New Jersey's sanctuary-state policies. Cape May County just became the third county to pass a resolution urging repeal of several state laws limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities, tying the issue to voter-roll concerns and calling for voter ID and policy rollbacks in Trenton.
