Rabies Found in Cat in Middletown

A rabid cat was found in the area of Ferraro Court, Green Oak Blvd. and Daniel Towers.

A stray cat tested positive for rabies Friday in Middletown, prompting township health officials to issue a rabies alert.

Animal Control responded to a cat that appeared sick and was acting abnormally in the area of Ferraro Court, Green Oak Blvd. and Daniel Towers on Wednesday, Nov. 17, a township spokeswoman said.

The cat was captured and sent to the State Laboratory for testing. On Friday, test results came back: The animal was positive for the rabies virus.

This is the first case of a rabid cat this year, however other wildlife in Middletown has tested positive for rabies, officials said.

So far in Middletown in 2015, 5 raccoons, 2 skunks and 1 fox have all tested positive for rabies, according to the township health department.

Nearby, a bat in East Brunswick tested positive for rabies earlier this week.

The cat was black with white markings on the chest and paws. If you, or your pet, had contact with this cat, please contact the Middletown Township Health Department and Animal Control at 732-615-2097 or the Middletown police at 732-615-2100.

Any resident with concerns or who sees other stray cats in this area are also encouraged to contact Animal Control.

Do not interact with wildlife or stray animals. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and please contact Animal Control. Please make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a rabies shot. Do not let your pets run free off leash, even in the woods. Remember, rabies is a fatal disease.
