Library Offering Senior Citizen Computer Program

Library director said programs are geared towards beginners.

In honor of National Senior Month, the is offering beginner's computer classes for senior citizens.

The three-part program includes topics such as hardware, software, keyboarding, using a mouse and email and Internet and those who sign up are required to attend all three parts. The first part was held last Friday and the second and third parts will be held on May 18 and May 25 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Library Director Allan Kleiman said the library decided to offer the programs now as it is a time in between Mother's Day and Father's Day when many children give their parents computers and other laptop devices. But offering a class just for seniors on the topics is new to the library.

While the classes are not restricted to seniors, Kleiman said the Friday morning classes are geared towards senior citizens. A few Montville Township Library Board of Trustees members questioned why the electronic sign outside the library said the classes were for "older adults" but Kleiman said it is so patrons are not confused and think the classes are for high school seniors.

Trustee Tom Mazzacaro asked if the library plans to offer courses for seniors, or other patrons, to learn how to use iPads.

"We do have an iPad and we're going to try to develop a class on how to use it," Kleiman said.
