Bond Ordinances, Puppy Mill Ban On Deck For Moorestown Council Meeting

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., preceded by the workshop at 7 p.m.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — In addition to a public hearing and final vote on the proposed ban on the sale of dogs and cats at pet shops in Moorestown, council will consider three proposed ordinances on first reading when it meets Monday night at town hall. The public action meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a workshop session at 7 p.m.

Two of the proposals are bond ordinance. One bond ordinance calls for the appropriation of $190,000 and the borrowing of $180,500 in bonds or notes for the purchase of police equipment. This includes four sport utility vehicles (SUVs), rifle sights and radar units. The down payment would be $9,500.

The other bond ordinance calls for the appropriation of $565,000 and the borrowing of $536,750 in bonds or notes for the reconstruction of the tennis and basketball courts at Maple Dawson Park. The down payment would be $28,250.

The final proposal calls for the installation of a bus stop on the south side of Camden Avenue, beginning on the far side of Garfield Avenue and extending 100 feet from there.

The proposed ban on the sale of dogs and cats at pet stores is an attempt by the township to prevent the sale of pets bred in puppy and kitten mills. If the ban is passed, residents would still be able to purchase dogs and cats from breeders and animal rescues.

There are five items on the consent agenda, including a proposed resolution to affirm the township’s civil rights policy with respect to all officials, appointees, employees, prospective employees, volunteers, independent contractors, and members of the public that come into contact with municipal employees, officials and volunteers.
