Moorestown Council Considers Water Main Replacements

Council also gave final approval to the cap bank proposal, sewer rate revisions and road resurfacing Monday night.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — Numerous water mains are set to be replaced under a plan approved on introduction by Moorestown Council this week. Council unanimously approved a proposed ordinance on first reading to appropriate funds for the replacement of various water mains throughout the township at its meeting Monday night, June 26. The public hearing and final vote on the proposal is set for the July 10 meeting.

Water main replacements would take place in the following locations:
  • North Church Street, from Main Street to Third Street;
  • Prospect Avenue, from South Third Street to High Street;
  • South Washington Avenue;
  • West Second Street, from Locust to Camden;
  • Mannion Avenue; and
  • Fairview Avenue, from Third Street to Kettleworth.

The portion of Second Street that intersects with Camden Avenue will also be resurfaced, according to Township Manager Tom Merchel. The township has already received bids, and work is expected to begin by the end of the summer.

Some residents had questions about when the water mains in their neighborhoods would be replaced, and about the overall progress as to the replacement of all water mains throughout the township. The older mains are replaced first.

Although Merchel has an ongoing list of replacements in his head, there is no official chart. He said he would work on having one made up.

Also on Monday night:
  • Council unanimously approved a proposed ordinance on second reading to exceed the municipal budget appropriations limit and establish a cap bank. It’s an annual proposal that goes along with the budget. Merchel said the budget is $1,454,000 below the cap limit, but the approval is necessary should the township need it for the future;
  • Council approved a proposed ordinance on second reading to appropriate $850,000, including the borrowing of $415,150 in bonds or notes for the resurfacing of Borton’s Landing Road; and
