To the Editor:

Now that RyanTrumpCare is dead, Americans wonder what’s next.

Instead of Mickey Mouse stunts with tax gimmicks, maybe someone will work on solutions to our basic problem: healthcare in the United States costs too much.

This country spends 16-17% of Gross Domestic Product on healthcare. Other countries in the rest of the industrialized world (like Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Canada, United Kingdom) spend 10-11%, yet manage to provide universal healthcare. Why are we spending so much more with no better health outcomes than these other countries?

Medicare spends 2-3% of income on administrative costs, whereas the typical health insurance company spends 20-30% on administrative costs, including profits.
