Moorestown Patch Letter To The Editor: When Did Lawbreaking Become Acceptable In Politics?

To the Editor:

What is acceptable practice for politicians? It used to be that some practices were accepted, while others were not. Now, with President Trump, acceptable is defined downward. Lawbreaking cabinet members are OK. Why?

We have Attorney General Sessions, who lied under oath about his Russian contacts during his Senate confirmation hearing. This is a criminal act. Yet, Sessions is still the Attorney General, the nation’s top cop. How come?

Recently, the Treasury Department fined Exxon Mobil $2 million for violating sanctions that the United States imposed on Russia in 2014 while Rex Tillerson was CEO. The Treasury report noted, “Exxon Mobil demonstrated reckless disregard for U.S. sanctions requirements. Exxon Mobil caused significant harm to the Ukraine-related sanctions program.” Yet, Mr. Tillerson is still Secretary of State, representing our country around the world. How come?

Why has this country come to accept lawbreakers in President Trump’s cabinet? Who is at fault? President Trump? Congress? The media? We the People?
