Open House at Green Vision Autism Program

Recycling facility that works with autism community wants to give you a peek into its operation.

Green Vision-a program that teaches and employs adolescent students and adults with autism how to properly dismantle and recycle unwanted electronics-has invited the public in for an open house. On Oct. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m., area residents can come to the Morris Plains facility to drop off unwanted electronics, tour the facility and learn more about the Green Vision program. Green Vision is at 60 East Hanover Ave., Unit B5

”We are excited to officially open up our facility to the community and let them know what we are doing. We are very passionate about this program and are planning to spread it nationwide within the next year," Tim Butler, president of Green Vision, said. "Green Vision gives our autistic students and adults a sense of accomplishment for a job well done. It also gives them a sense of self-worth. They have so many capabilities and we are looking to foster them through this program.”

According to Green Vision, since 2009 it has has recycled more than 400,000 pounds of electronic materials and has a goal to reach 1 million pounds by 2013.

"Green Vision challenges students with tasks that allow them to use problem-solving skills while dismantling a wide variety of devices. As the e-waste is being taken apart, students and adults sort the materials so that they can be recycled," the program said in a statement.

Green Vision is 99.7% landfill free, and all of the recyclable materials go to federally licensed facilities. Not only is Green Vision providing a service to students and adults by giving them meaningful job skill training, but they are also providing an environmentally sound “green” solution to the local community.
