Dollar stores have become an everyday part of the American shopping landscape, offering bargain-lovers and budget-conscious families a way to get small household items for next-to-nothing.
Shoppers at the plaza on Route 10 in Morris Plains were so eager to check out the latest such business that they came in and started filling their baskets even before the scheduled 2:30 p.m. grand opening of Just A Buck on Friday. "This is just what Morris Plains needed," said an enthusiastic customer.

Druetzler presented owners Thafer Hanini and Steven Bakst with the key to the city before a large gathering of family members and shoppers. During the presentation, when Mr. Thafer said, "It's great to be in this community," someone from the crowd shouted out, "A community of caring" Morris Plains' oft-used motto.
"Absolutely," the mayor answered. "It's wonderful that you are here. The people of Morris Plains wish you much success."

There was a steady flow of customers, and the event was a truly a family affair: Mr. Hanini's wife, Summer, daughter Nour, and son Zack were serving coffee and doughnuts to shoppers.
Just A Buck opened its first store back in 1988 in Poughkeepsie, NY. Since then, stores have appeared throughout the Northeast, but concentrated in the New York/New Jersey area. Stores also can be found in Tennessee and Ohio, with further openings in the works.
Shoppers can choose from kitchen and bathroom essentials, hardware, candy, snacks, seasonal decorations, holiday cards other items, all for $1.
