N.J. Storm Updates: State Police Say 'Stay Home'; Snow Totals Revised In Nor'easter

The nor'easter-blizzard has caused at least 142 accidents, flooding, slippery roads and heavy snow accumulations in New Jersey on Tuesday. South Jersey and the Jersey Shore have had mostly rain and flooding, and snow total predictions have been revised statewide (see below).

A state of emergency now is in effect for a storm that's still expected to dump as much as a foot of snow over much of New Jersey and bring 50 mph gusts. Downed trees are causing major problems on the New Jersey Turnpike and other roadways, and as many as 10,000 are without power (see list below).

The N.J. State Police urged people to stay home "if possible. Road conditions are hazardous," especially with black ice becoming a potential threat as temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s.

Here is what is happening:

• Snow total predictions have been revised for New Jersey, while as much as a foot of snow has fall in North Jersey so far. Read more here...

• Many streets along the Jersey Shore were already flooded by midday Tuesday morning. Officials are warning residents not to drive through flood water and to stay off the roads altogether unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. Read more here...
• Snow totals have been revised, but 10 to 14 inches of snow are still possible Tuesday in North Jersey, with wind gusts as high as 36 mph. The heavy snow will make many roads impassable and may produce widespread power outages due to the weight of the snow on tree limbs and power lines. Read more here...
• The National Weather Service has cancelled a winter weather advisory for coastal central and Southern New Jersey but has issued a high-wind and ice accumulation warning for much of Tuesday. Read more here....
• The heavy winds and thick, sticky snow have knocked out power to more than a thousand customers in Morris County — and the snow is expected to keep coming. Read more here..
• A pick-up truck collided with a state snowplow on Route 130 at 9:35 a.m. in New Jersey, police said. Read more here...
• As of early Tuesday morning, more than 700 flights had been cancelled at JFK Airport; more than 800 flights had been cancelled at LaGuardia Airport; and more than 1,000 flights had been cancelled at Newark Airport (EWR) in New Jersey.
• More than 5,300 customers are without power in Ocean County Tuesday morning as a nor'easter bringing strong winds has brought down power lines in some areas. Read more here...

Here are the revised snow total predictions for New Jersey, where some areas have had mostly rain and flooding:

The National Weather Service had issued a blizzard warning in 13 counties, for Monmouth and Mercer County and north, while the rest of the state was under a winter storm warning. Early Tuesday, the blizzard warning was canceled in Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer and eastern Bergen counties.

NJ Transit has also suspended all bus service because of the storm. Rail service is operating on a weekend schedule. Already, 19 inches have fallen in some areas, and many have prepared for the lasting effects of the storm.

State officials are warning people to stay off the roads as the storm begins to push the warmer weather away. Speed restrictions are also in effect on major highways.
