NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The Jewish men's fraternity house on the Rutgers campus was targeted by vandalism Monday, during the holy Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, according to the university.

A member of Alpha Epsilon Pi notified Rutgers Police that three eggs were found broken on the sidewalk of a side entrance to the fraternity house Monday morning, said Rutgers spokeswoman Dory Devlin. This happened either Sunday night or early Monday; Monday was Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and one of the holiest days in the Jewish religion.

There was no damage to the fraternity house. Rutgers campus police are investigating.

“To those who vandalized @RutgersU ‘s Jewish fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, during Rosh Hashanah, I say this: Antisemitism has no place in New Jersey. I will always condemn and speak out against bigotry and intolerance,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement on Twitter and Facebook Monday night.

"Neither hatred nor bigotry has a place at Rutgers, nor should they have a place anywhere in the world," said the Rutgers spokeswoman.

This is not the first time the Rutgers Jewish men's fraternity house has been vandalized:

In April of 2021, someone threw eggs at the fraternity house during an outdoor Holocaust memorial service. In that incident, AEPi invited the public to read the names of those who died in the Holocaust, or light a memorial candle. "Everyone and anyone is welcome to come to 34 Sicard St to read names, light a memorial candle or donate to the National Holocaust Museum," the fraternity said in this Instagram post.

The eggs were thrown at the house during the reading, said Rutgers police at the time.

"This just shows us why we need to continue to have events like this," said the fraternity at the time.

Prior incidents of anti-Semitism on the Rutgers campus:

  • Earlier in 2022, someone yelled anti-Semitic comments and tossed objects at members of the fraternity house, NJ.com reported.
  • In 2016, a Rutgers student, who happens to be Jewish, was feuding with her two roommates. She said she returned to her dorm room one day to find a swastika taped to her ceiling.
  • Then twice in 2017, swastikas were found around campus: A swastika was found written on a dry erase board in a study lounge in Clothier Hall. Another was found on Stonier Hall.
  • Also in 2017, two different white supremacist groups put recruitment flyers around the Rutgers campus. The groups were identified as Identity Evropa and American Vanguard; flyers were found taped inside and outside multiple campus buildings, and up by Voorhees Chapel. At the time, Identity Evropa said it was trying to recruit members at college campuses. White Supremacist Fliers Found Again At Rutgers University
