Manslaughter, Assault Charges Filed Against Bergen County Father Who Allegedly Punched His Baby

Yoseop Choi's son died Thursday after he was removed from life support.

The father of a 5-month-old baby he allegedly punched and violently shook has been charged with additional crimes following the infant’s death, authorities announced.

The additional charges filed against Yoseop Choi of Fort Lee are aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of a child, said Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli. The aggravated manslaughter is a first-degree charge, the other two are second-degree charges.

Molinelli announced the baby’s death Thursday on Twitter after the infant had been in critical condition for days following the alleged abuse, Molinelli said.

Choi brought the baby to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition last month. Hospital officials called New Jersey protective services, who called Molinelli’s office, after the child was examined. The baby had a severe head injury and a rib fracture that was in the process of healing, authorities said.

Choi was initially charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
