Pedestrian Hit By NJ Transit Bus In Mountainside, Airlifted To Hospital

Breaking: This marks the sixth pedestrian hit by a car while trying to cross Route 22 in the past six months.

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — A pedestrian has reportedly been struck by a NJ Transit bus on Route 22 East in Mountainside.

The victim, a man, was attempting to cross Route 22 in Mountainside near Mountain Avenue when he was hit by the NJ Transit bus 114 line on March 21 at 4:30 p.m., according to NJ Transit Spokeswoman Lisa Torbic.

The bus had no passengers on board and was traveling from Mountainside to Port Authority Bus Terminal to begin the start of its route, Torbic said.

The pedestrian walked in front of the bus as he was attempting to cross the highway when he was sturck by the bus and knocked to the ground, Torbic said.

The victim sustained head injuries and was airlifted to area hospital around 5 p.m.

Officials are investigating and all traffic is being diverted off the highway at the moment as all lanes are closed.

There have been five pedestrian deaths on Route 22 spanning from Bridgewater to Union in the past 6 months.

A pedestrian from Hampton was killed in January in Bridgewater.

A Bridgewater man, Marcus Cook, 25 was also fatally hit by a car in the same area on Dec. 18. Two other pedestrians were also struck and killed on the same portion of Route 22 early in the morning on Aug. 25.
