Alpine Learning Group Honored by New Jersey School Boards Association and ASAH

The Alpine Learning Group, a private, not-for-profit school serving children, teens and adults with autism, was recently honored for their innovations and excellence in special education as part of Special Education Week.

2013 marks the 29th consecutive year that New Jersey has celebrated Special Education Week. The week-long event, established through a proclamation issued by the Governor, is championed by ASAH ... Serving the Private Special Education Community Since 1974, in collaboration with the New Jersey School Boards Association.  The designation recognizes the achievements of students with disabilities, as well as efforts of parents, teachers and school leaders throughout the state.

Leaders at Alpine Learning Group were honored for their program, "Creating Healthy Smiles," which helps prepare children with autism for a trip to the dentist. In collaboration with Bergen County Community College, teachers at Alpine Learning Group work to systematically desensitize children to the sights and sounds of the dentists office. Barbara Gantwerk, Assistant Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Education, together with leaders from the New Jersey School Boards Association, presented the plaque and praised the school for its cutting edge approach.

"Alpine Learning Group has created a program that makes a real difference in the lives of its students," said Gerard Thiers, Executive Director of ASAH. "They are one of the programs in our state that sets the standard for excellence in the education of children with autism."
