From the Shadows a Light Shall Spring

Don’t be afraid to have some dark spots in your landscape lighting design. I believe that the dark spots in a lighting design are like the ‘rests’ in music. In a piece of music if all instruments played all at the same time it would just be a lot of noise.

A landscape lighting design with lights everywhere shining on everything is just a lot of visual noise. A well-lit feature framed by darkness creates contrast and makes the feature ‘pop’. The darkness is a rest for the viewers eye, and creates a rhythm throughout the design.

Please don’t let your landscape lighting design be noisy.
