Mismatching patterns is a difficult statement to pull off. If the pattern combination isn’t right, you can look as if you got dressed in the dark. Solid colors are the most formal style while paisleys and polka dots are extremely casual.
If you are wearing a pinstripe suit, neither your tie nor shirt should have the same pattern. By matching a broad chalk-stripe shirt and solid tie, you will look sharp and strapping.
