New Glen Rock Parents' Network Designed To Promote Safe Partying

Network members would pledge not to serve alcohol in their homes and register on a website.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — Officials might create a database designed to curb parties and underage drinking in the borough.

The Party Safe Parent Network would have a website where parents could register and be added to a database of "safe houses," said Mayor Bruce Packer.

Police broke up an unsupervised rowdy party at the Indian Road townhouses late last month. Officers from Glen Rock, Ridgewood and Fair Lawn spent two hours restoring order in the area. A 14-year-old hosted the party.

Parents would have the contact information of network members' homes where there is a gathering so that members can reach that member and confirm that a parent is there and that alcohol won't be served.

Council President Amy Martin has been working on the website over the summer. The idea grew out of a community forum held earlier this year where Packer urged parents to talk to each other and share information.

"It isn't a cure-all, but it is a way for parents to feel like they are actively participating in curbing underage drinking," said Martin, a mother of three. "Underage drinking, kids have been doing it forever and they can feel really helpless in trying to fight it sometimes."

Packer and the Borough Council will discuss the matter at a council meeting Monday at 7:30 p.m.
