BOBBIN LACE DISPLAY

The Metropolitan Chapter of the an international organization dedicated to promoting interest in and education about making bobbin lace has installed a display at the Oradell Public Library on view through the month of August. Bobbin lace is made with the use of bobbins which are wooden, spool-like spindles and straight pins.  Before bobbins, bone was used instead; the lace was once called fishbone lace.  It won’t surprise readers to also learn that the hedgehog is the mascot of organization because of its pin cushion-like appearance.  A wooden hedgehog, a pillow fitted with a lace project in progress, and numerous examples of lace from Russia, England and Italy, all housed in the library’s large display case make the handi-craft come alive.  Additionally, information about membership, classes, demonstrations, as well as a gallery of images of bobbin lace can be found at their website, http://metropolitanchapterioli.org/.  Metropolitan chapter members from New York and Bergen and Rockland Counties actively meet, study and make lace.
