Community Corner

The Week That Was in South Orange

With temperatures reaching the 90s this week, many residents were irked by the closure of the main community pool due to filtration problems. Also, Lauryn Hill, Zach Braff and other locally-grown luminaries took part in a fundraiser for SOPAC.

On Monday, we reported on the CHS girls track team's national championship in North Carolina and Zach Braff and AJ Calloway's homecoming over the weekend for a SOPAC fundraiser gala. We also had a profile of a local hypnotherapist whose practice focuses on pregnancy and childbirth and coverage of a recent magic show at CHS.

On Tuesday, we ran an interview with Carrie Fisher, scheduled to come to SOPAC this weekend, when she's also taping footage for an HBO special. We also had a profile of the CHS '10 graduates with the first- and second-highest GPAs.

On Wednesday, we ran photos from Midnight Madness (the alcohol-free post-graduation party) and a story on local artists coming together for a community portrait in Cameron Field. We also had a story on the MSO Girls Softball teams winning at the district championships.

On Thursday, we had an update on the status of the Olympic-sized pool, which was open only intermittently throughout the week due to a filtration problem, and interviewed Bayou blues singer Marc Broussard, who's scheduled to perform at SOPAC on Sunday. We also reported on the Board of Trustees's decision to cut funding to SOPAC and the Community Coalition on Race by 10 percent at a budget workshop.

On Friday, we had an interactive map showing the college destinations of graduating CHS seniors. And, lastly, we said goodbye.
