Unlocked Car Stolen From Summit With Dog Inside

Several other unsecured motor vehicles were stolen in Summit last month, some with key fobs left inside.

SUMMIT, NJ — As police continue to beseech motor vehicle owners to stop leaving their keys in their cars, Summit police reported several more thefts of unsecured vehicles last month.

In particular, on May 16, the police took a report of an unsecured motor vehicle that was stolen while parked on Passaic Avenue. The keys were inside, as was a "small dog," police said.

The windows were open.

Shortly after the report was taken, at 11:13 a.m., police located the vehicle in Chatham with no damage to the vehicle.

"The dog was in good health, safely inside," police said.

Here are other recent car thefts and car burglaries reported by the Summit Police:

  • A 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee was reported stolen on May 23 at 8:37 a.m. from a residence on Oak Ridge Avenue. The key fob had been left inside. The owner said it could have been taken any time after 7 p.m. the previous evening.
  • The same day, police took a report at 10:59 a.m. of a stolen Audi from a Woodland Avenue residence. The owner had left the key fob inside, police said. The incident could have occurred any time after 11 p.m. the previous night, the owners said.
  • The same day, at 8:52 a.m. a Tulip Street resident reported that an item was taken from an unlocked vehicle in the driveway. Missing was one Henry Bendel clutch bag valued at $100, with $50 to $70 in cash in it, police said.
  • On May 13, the owner of a "Jeep Wrangler style vehicle" reported that some time in the previous 30 days, six Jeep Wrangler soft tops were stolen from his Broad Street business — worth a total of $18,000.
