WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — A truck got into a crash along Interstate 295 and overturned into the Hessian Run Tributary in West Deptford, spilling diesel fuel into the water and slowing down traffic Wednesday morning, authorities said.

A commercial utility truck and an SUV collided around 7:15 a.m. near the northbound ramp by West Deptford High School, officials said. The truck then ran off the roadway to the right, hit a guardrail, struck a snowbank and overturned into the tributary.

It's unclear what caused the crash.

Good Samaritans and West Deptford police rescued the truck driver and passenger from the submerged wreckage. They were brought to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, said State Police Tpr. Christopher Postorino.

The incident caused a "significant fuel leak" into the tributary, according to the Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management (GCOEM).

About 150 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled and cleaned up, Postorino said.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and is supporting spill-control efforts along the tidal waterway, officials said after the crash.

Hessian Run is a tributary of Woodbury Creek, which feeds into the Delaware River.

All lanes on I-295 have reopened, the GCOEM said around 1 p.m. Wednesday. But crews may be working along the shoulder throughout the day, so drivers should stay alert.

The crash remains under investigation.
