5/6 Team Anderson starts the season with a W

After two rainouts, Team A starts 2012 on a winning track

After a few rainouts, Westwood Softball 5/6 Team Anderson was finally ready to play its first game of the 2012 season, against fellow 5/6 Westwood Team DiCuffa, who already had a few games under its belt.

By the time home Team A came to bat in the bottom of the first, they were already down by a score of 1-0, after a walk by starting pitcher  Kaitlyn K to Chailyn C, and her advancing around the bases due to a fielder’s choice, steal, and Team A throwing error.  Not to worry, as two runs scored for Team A the first time they stepped to the plate.  After striking out the first two batters, Tina F. walked the next two (Katie A. and Molly M), and a slow roller to first by Sydney L. enabled two runners to score.  Team D came back in the top of the second to tie it at 2, and the score would remain that way until the bottom of the third.  Team A rallied to start the inning off against new Team D pitcher Mackenzie W.  A single by Katie A. , sandwiched between two walks (Mackenzie P.  and Molly M.),  and Sam L. tallied an RBI on a fielder’s choice grounder, while next batter Sydney L. got two RBIs in similar fashion.

With the score now at 5-2, Team D got two back in the top of the 4th.  Team A’s pitcher Sam L struck out the first batter, but two walks (Annaliese G. and Tina F) and two singles (Sarah K and Lauren B) later, and Team D closed the gap to 5-4.  That’s the closest they would get, with the story the rest of the way being solid defense and shutdown pitching from Team A’s Sam L and Kaitlyn K.  The big offensive inning was the bottom of the 5th, and the score at 6-4 for Team A.  After getting two quick outs, team A loaded the bases on three consecutive walks to Sydney L., Natalie P., and Jada D.  Team D’s new pitcher struggled to find the plate, and four runs scored when all was said and done.  In the top of the 6th, Katilyn K. came back to finish what she started , facing four batters and recording 2 strikeouts in the frame, on the way to a 10-4 final score victory for Team A.  For her efforts, KK was awarded the game ball.
