One Person's Junk Is Another Person's Treasure: Your Cyber Guide To Selling And Buying Stuff

Got stuff? Want stuff? Check out Macaroni Kid's handy cyber guide to finding new homes for your unwanted items and discovering new treasures.

Spring is "garage sale" season!   With so much that can be done online these days, you don't need to host your own garage sale to clean out your basement and garage full of "junk", or pore through local newspapers to find out what garage sales are happening in your neck of the woods.  Macaroni Kid has put together a handy cyber guide to connect you to the places to sell your unwanted goods and to find new treasures.

Facebook has become a growing hotspot for families to buy and sell their stuff.  What's great about these community pages is that they tend to focus on certain items (e.g. kids' stuff) or they are area-specific (e.g. Bergen County).  When joining a group, be sure you understand the terms of posting and familiarize yourself with lingo.  For example, ISO means "in search of"; FS means "For sale"; PPU means "Pending pick up".  Here's a sampling of groups you can join:

Cute Kids Toy & Gear Resale - Northern NJ
Garage Sale Online - Bergen County Families

North Jersey Garage Sale
Moms Exchange of Essex & Passaic County

Craigslist is another option for online buying and selling mainly bigger items like baby items and indoor and outdoor furniture.  An advantage and disadvantage to craigslist is it is open to a larger community - more stuff, more options, more opportunity to bargain.  But at the same time, it has been more prone to scams and shady dealings.

Prefer to buy and sell in person? Several local websites have Garage Sale Calendars where people can post and view local garage sales happening around the area:

Borough of Hillsdale
Patch.com
Playgroundtalk Blog

Want free stuff or got free stuff?  Bergen County Freecycle is a great way to keep junk out of landfills and find great stuff for FREE!  You must sign up to become a member and you can then post items that you are selling or are looking for.  If you're a real treasure junkie, you can choose to receive daily emails or visit the site as needed.

Happy Spring Cleaning!
