Senior Girls Even Their Record

The Westwood 7/8/9 squad comes from behind to even their record

With two recent rainouts and a short roster of nine girls for Saturday’s (May 21) game, the Westwood Seniors recently traveled to face Oradell at River Dell High School. It was great to play on their perfectly groomed field but the humidity made it tough... and what’s the deal with that loose third base? After being ahead 6-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, Oradell came back to tie off their very powerful clean-up hitter’s hit - a very nice three-run double that was tracked down effectively by Bella G in center!

The defense continued to shut Oradell down the last two innings and Westwood closed it out with eight unanswered runs. The final score was 14 to 6 moving the Seniors to 2 and 2 for the season. The girls had 12 hits and seven walks while only giving up four hits to their opponents! Mariel H led the offense going 3 for 4, three RBIs, with a triple and Sonya C scoring three runs off two walks and a double. Olivia G and Emily M also scored three times. Marcella O pitched well to start striking out eight while walking only three and allowing just two runs. Olivia G came in for the second half of the game and pitched very well when she needed to.

Defensively everyone contributed, highlighted by an excellent catch in right from Emily M. Of course everyone had to play well to come from behind and with the sun and humidity it was tough on the players. Their efforts given the mid-day game were greatly appreciated by the coaches.
