Westwood Cardinals U10 Team Continues to Win

It was another strong offensive performance by the U10 Westwood Cardinals, as they knocked off previously unbeaten Maywood 12-7 on Monday, July 11 in Rochelle Park.

The hitters had some help on the mound, as Kaitlyn K turned in a lights-out performance in relief, retiring all eight batters she faced, five on strikeouts, to close out the win.

The Cardinals started off strong with four runs in the first (with their first five batters reaching base, and the big hit was a two-run single for Sam L) and three more in the second (Katie A drove in Kaitlyn K and Molly M with a base hit, plus Sam L's RBI single plated Jillian P) to make it 7-0. Maywood made things interesting, though, closing to 7-5 after three innings.

In the fourth, Westwood responded with a four-spot, thanks to an RBI single by Katie A and the hit of the game, a two-run home run by Tina F. Maywood battled back, scoring two more in their half of the fourth, and the score remained 11-7 until the seventh. Annaliese G's two-out single drove in Sam L to complete the scoring. Westwood tallied 13 hits and nine walks for the game.

Defensively, Ally D had a lot of action around first base, including a nice tag on an overthrow to get the runner at first, and the play of the day in the sixth: a diving stab of a hard-hit grounder near the bag. Kaitlyn K made a nice catch of a line drive to short center and Sam L, Delaney F and Jillian P all recorded ground ball outs.

Westwood improved to 6-3-1 on the season, and faced Ramsey at home on July 13.
