Conrad’s Candy to Appear on Martha Stewart Special Sunday

Martha Stewart’s camera crew came to in Westwood to record owners Corinne and son JJ Krachtus for an Easter special on the Hallmark channel.

JJ Krachtus said they found his family’s shop on About.com’s Top 10 Easter Bunny list.

“They gave us a call to kind of feel us out and see if we were what they were looking for,” he said. “Eventually someone stopped by who actually has been a customer and lives in Washington Township.”

The Martha Stewart Show filmed Conrad’s making Easter bunnies with metal molds, an old-school form of bunny making, Krachtus said. The Krachtuses made a few bunnies for recording purposes.

The crew filmed on a Sunday, Feb. 27, from 7 a.m. until about 8:30 p.m.

“They put in a long day. We tried to get things as set up as possible for them and then it’s more than one take, screw-ups,” Krachtus said. “I’ve had my friends film me before, but it was fun.”

Although the show only took footage of metal mold making, Conrad’s uses a variety of about 40 to 50 different 3D molds to create the chocolate bunnies. Each Easter store personnel make more than 5,000 chocolate bunnies.

Stewart’s one-hour Easter special is set to air on the Hallmark channel Sunday, one week before Easter, giving Conrad’s more exposure at one of the store’s busiest times of year.

“I’m hoping that there will be some good publicity,” Krachtus said.

Conrad’s also ships out candy orders from its website. But Krachtus said the online bunny orders will depend on the weather on Easter.

“If it’s too warm we really can’t ship because they melt,” he said. “But I’m hoping the increased publicity will increase our customer-base.”
