The David Glukh International Klezmer Ensemble will bring a very lively, vibrant program, “Klezmer Travels the World” to the St. John’s Hillsdale (NJ) Arts Festival on Saturday, November 14 in the attractive 1,200-seat, high-ceiling, 3/4 round-seating architectural gem in northern Bergen County, which is sought-after by prominent Arts organizations for its acoustics.
David Glukh Klezmer Ensemble has performed worldwide in concert, on TV and radio to a critical acclaim, and is one of the most unusual groups of its kind, featuring a higher-pitched piccolo trumpet, as well as accordion, clarinet, violin, bass and percussion. Their performances include “fusions” between the Eastern European Ashkenazi Jewish klezmer style and many of the musical traditions of the rest of the world. Selections from their second CD, Klezmer Travels The World, will be heard in this concert, which will feature traditional klezmer and original improvised world fusion pieces, which Richard Marcus from blogcritics.org wrote, “I’ve been listening to klezmer music since the early days of its revival in the 1980’s, and this Ensemble has to be the best I’ve heard yet. The group has performed in such prestigious NYC concert venues as Lincoln Center’s Merkin Concert Hall and Alice Tully Hall, as well as in the Wharton Center in Michigan, and the Skirball Center in Los Angeles. They have collaborated with the best-selling Sony Recording Artist, violinist Lara St. John. Invited by jazz great, Dave Douglas, the Ensemble participated in all-star concert to benefit New York City public schools. If you have never listened to klezmer music before, Klezmer Travels The World will be the most exotic musical cruise of the world you could take without ever leaving home.
