Westwood Gallery is pleased to present original paintings and prints by Helen Frank in an exhibit opening Saturday, November 24th from 10– 5 PM. The show features scenes from the Jersey Shore. A percentage of all sales will be donated to Hurricane relief by the artist and the gallery. The gallery is open to the public and the exhibit will continue through December 30th. Helen Frank is the artist-laureate of New Jersey. Having drawn and painted the pier at Seaside Heights and life at the Jersey Shore throughout her career, she watched in disbelief as Sandy wreaked devastation on the homes, boardwalks, and the lives of countless families. Inspired by the images of the Jet Star roller coaster and the lyrics of Bruce Springsteen, new work emerged encompassing “our carnival life on the water” referencing the lyrics from 4th of July, Asbury Park, - subtitled “Sandy” with unintended irony.
The skeletal image of the crumpled rollercoaster driven into the ocean is in stark contrast to the idyllic scenes of cousins frolicking in the surf, children napping under an umbrella, and the lovers on the beach that Helen Frank is known for and may not be seen again for a long time.

Perhaps the most important asset of any artist is honesty, the ability to see the world truthfully. Not one to shy away from difficult subjects, Helen Frank has made art from the adversity of cancer, homelessness, and the gulf oil spill. It is by making tangible the emotions we all share that the artist leaves a record of our existence.
