General Assembly Approves Flooding Bill
The General Assembly approved legislation to create the Rockland-Bergen Bistate River Commission and flood management and prevention plan on Tuesday

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the General Assembly approved bipartisan legislation backed by Republicans Charlotte Vandervalk and Robert Schroeder of Bergen County, to address flooding issues in Bergen and Rockland Counties. Bergen and Rockland county communities are constantly dealing with flooding issues.
The Vandervalk/Schroeder Bill, A-2440, would create a Bistate River Commission that will develop a coordinated flood management and prevention plan for the North Jersey and New York counties, according to NJ Assembly Republicans.
The Bill would create an 18-member Rockland-Bergen Bistate River Commission, which would protect the streams flowing south from Rockland County into Bergen County, Assembly Republicans said. These bodies of water include the Hackensack River, Sparkill Brook/Creek, Saddle River, Ramapo/Mahwah River and the communities that are prone to flooding

Elected officials of both the Republican and Democratic parties in Rockland and Bergen Counties will select members of the commission. The River Commission would create a plan to address existing flood hazards and assess potential development that could impact waterways. The commission would also be in charge of environmental cleanup, maintenance and flood protection in these areas.
