Hillsdale Hiring New Police Officer
Mayor Max Arnowitz said he hoped to have a new officer working by September.

Hillsdale officials hope to have a new police officer by the end of the summer.
The borough council voted to let Police Chief Chip Stalter begin searching for a new candidate to replace Jeff Angermeyer, who will be leaving to take a job with the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
"With Jeff leaving, we are down four patrolmen, and that's not acceptable," Mayor Max Arnowitz said, referring to some recent retirements from the department.

Arnowitz said he would like to have a candidate for the council's August meeting and then have the new officer "on the street" by September.
Stalter said he would advertise for police officers already certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission so the candidate will not need much training to get started.

Having a new officer replacing Angermeyer will save between $50,000 and $70,000 in salary costs next year, according to Stalter. The council also agreed to , which is expected to save about $246,000 each year compared to the cost of police officers running the dispatch desk, according to Council President Michael Giancarlo.
Stalter will also be promoting one of the department's officers to sergeant to replace Police Sgt. John Scordato, who retired earlier this year. Currently, the department has three sergeants but they typically have four. One sergeant supervises each shift, Stalter said.
