Incumbents Victorious in Westwood

Voters chose to stick with sitting officials Tuesday

Westwood Mayor John Birkner Jr. defeated challengers Robert Miller, a Republican, and Thomas Wanner, an Independent, to retain his position of leadership in the borough Tuesday. Republican Councilman John J. Sciara and Councilwoman Cynthia Waneck also kept their seats.

Birkner received 1,709 votes, Miller got 594 and Wanner received 400, according to the unofficial results.

On the council side, Sciara received 1,408 votes and Waneck got 1,454 while Democratic challengers Philip Cerruti and David Fischer received 1,068 and 1,034 votes respectively, according to the unofficial results.

Waneck said she hopes to continue the progress that the council has made in the past year. "It's great to be recognized and reelected in my own home town," she added.

Sciara said he too hoped to continue on the current path. "I'm happy to be working with this mayor and council," he said. "I'm very pleased tonight."
